Embers and Your Roof: Vents, Gutters and the Gaps

The picture people carry of a wildfire is a wall of flame arriving at a house. What actually destroys most homes is quieter: embers carried well ahead of the fire, landing on and around a building, finding somewhere to lodge and smolder. Embers arrive first and travel far

Burning material lofted by a fire's own convection column can travel a considerable distance downwind, and it lands as a shower rather than a single point. A house well away from the flame front can receive thousands of them.

That changes what matters. A fire-rated roof covering is necessary and it is not sufficient, because the covering is not usually where ignition happens. What matters is every opening, gap and accumulation of fuel on and around the roof assembly.

Vents are the main way in

Attics need ventilation and every vent is an opening. An ember drawn through a vent into an attic full of dry timber and stored belongings has found the ideal place to start.

Standard vent screening was designed to keep out birds and rodents rather than embers, and coarse mesh lets burning fragments through. Finer non-combustible metal mesh is the established improvement, and there are vents specifically manufactured to resist ember and flame intrusion that go considerably further.

Every vent counts, and it is the forgotten ones that matter: gable vents, eave and soffit vents, ridge vents, dormer vents, and the vents for the dryer and the bathroom fans. Requirements for construction in high fire hazard areas are set in state and local code and they do get revised, so confirm what currently applies before specifying anything.

Gutters are fuel at the roof edge

A gutter packed with dry leaves and needles is a continuous line of kindling sitting exactly where the roof covering meets the fascia. An ember landing in it has fuel, air and a direct path to the eave.

Clear them, and clear them more often than a rainfall schedule would suggest. In this valley the debris load arrives through the dry season, which is precisely when the fire risk is highest and when nobody is thinking about gutters.

Metal guards help by keeping the trough clear, though they are not a substitute for checking. Plastic guards are a poor idea in a fire area for reasons that should be obvious.

The roof surface itself

Debris accumulates in valleys, behind chimneys, against parapets and anywhere the roof geometry creates a pocket. Those spots collect the same needles and leaves as the gutters and they sit directly on the covering.

Tile roofs have a particular consideration. The openings at the eave and at the ridge under barrel tile are a route into the assembly, and they should be closed with non-combustible bird stop rather than left open or filled with mortar that cracks and falls out.

Any gap where the covering meets a wall, a skylight or a penetration is worth looking at with embers in mind rather than only water.

The zone right against the house

The first few feet around a building do more to determine its fate than anything further out. Bark mulch against a wall, a woodpile under the eave, dry shrubs touching the siding, a doormat, patio furniture cushions: all of them catch embers and all of them burn against the structure.

That strip wants to be non-combustible. Gravel, hardscape or bare soil rather than organic mulch, nothing stored against the wall, and plants kept well back and well watered. It is the cheapest fire protection available and it costs mostly effort.

Overhanging branches deserve the same attention. A limb over the roof drops debris onto it continuously and puts burning material directly above the structure.

Where roofs and decks meet

Decks attached to a house are a known weak point, and the underside is the part that matters. Embers collect beneath a deck among whatever has accumulated there, and a deck fire against a wall becomes a house fire quickly.

Keep the space under a deck clear and screened where practical. Where a lower roof drains onto or near a deck, that junction collects debris and deserves checking with the rest of the roof.

What to do before a season, not during one

Have the roof and its vents assessed while there is time to change something. Retrofitting ember-resistant vents, closing gaps at tile eaves and correcting a detail are straightforward jobs done calmly and impossible done under an evacuation warning.

Then keep up the maintenance that actually matters: gutters and valleys clear through the dry season, branches off the roof, nothing combustible against the walls. None of it is dramatic and all of it is what decides how a house does when the embers arrive.
